iMac G3

From Misc Data Digs

A very colorful computer for its time. Definitely much more so than even Apple products just a few years later.

Revisions A and B[edit | edit source]

The first two revisions of the iMac contain some features on the PCBs that were not carried over to other revisions.

  • Although the release units would never come with a floppy disk drive, a connector for it does exist on Rev A and B motherboards, allowing one to retrofit one in.
  • Similarly, an undocumented PCI mezzanine "perch" card slot exists on Rev A and B motherboards. Only a handful of cards were released that used this slot.
  • An infrared port also exists in these revisions, but these do not support IRTalk.

Hidden Credits[edit | edit source]

Inside many of the ROMs is a listing of people who worked on the system ROMS.

First, this LZSS-compressed string can be seen in Mac OS New World ROM 1.1 at 0x1422FB, which is located inside nlib_-20777_USBFamilyExpertLib.pef:

And below is a proper spacing of these names:

Kathy Christian
Tom Clark
Dave Falkenburg
David Ferguson
Guillermo Gallegos
Craig Keithley
Bruce Merritt
Barry Twycross
Greg Schroeder

Second, there's an additional string found in many of the later New World ROMs, such as in 1.6 at 0x15CA70, regarding the USB Driver. This correlates to ndrv_-20776_pciclass_0c0310.pef.
