Unused Sprites[edit | edit source]

As of Update 2.2.0, this sprite of Amy T-posing can be seen inside the player sprites files.

TPOSEA_!
Clearly used for reference

Inside the main game files, you can find a unused artwork of Black Eggman divided in two parts. As of version 2.2.0, you can also find a updated version that is yet unused and its purpose is unknown.

The division in 2 parts makes people believe that this was intended as a poster on Egg Rock, but later it was added as a easter egg out of bounds in Techno Hill zone as well as an Easter egg behind the goal post of Deep Sea Act 1.

Leftovers From Previous Versions[edit | edit source]

In "Finaldemo 1.09.4", the Zero Ring zone was removed but a single texture from the removed "Zero Ring zone" remains in the files to this day. That texture reads "ALL YOUR RINGS ARE BELONG TO US", which is a clear reference to the infamous line from Zero Wing, " ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US".

Texture
This was once used in demo 3.

When version 2.2 came out, the SRB1 remake was removed from the game, but its textures are still on the files for modding purposes.

SRB1 text srb2.png

In 2.2, almost every level got new textures, even though some levels like Green Flower have a subdirectory labeled as "OLD" with all of the old textures for the level.

The old textures

In the internal files, there are textures for stages such as "Star Light", "Hidden Palace", etc. These are not documented here because these are for modding purposes and often used in that way.

Unused Levels[edit | edit source]

Blue Mountain Zone ACT 2

This level was added in SRB2 2.0.0 as a concept of a second act for Red Volcano zone. It was very short and incomplete. The idea was scrapped in favor of a normal volcano level for red volcano act 2. When 2.1.0 came out, this level got deleted.[2]

Bluemountain srb2.png

Unused Music[edit | edit source]

Red Volcano Alt. is a alternate arrangement of red volcano zone act 1, it is not used anywhere in the game nor appears on the sound test

Out of Bounds Easter eggs[edit | edit source]

The previously mentioned black eggman poster

as of 2.2 the unused poster of black eggman can be found if you use noclip to make it through the walls of techno hill zone act 1.

Unused disco room

the disco room is probably the most well known srb2 secret, but well this is not the same disco room ,upon entering this room, the music of the level changes to a remix of a earthworm jim song and you can find eggman,a special stage token, and many disco things. this room is located in egg rock zone 2.

Version Changes[edit | edit source]

DEMO 1[edit | edit source]

Demo 1 is the first demo of SRB2 after the Halloween and Christmas spin-offs for the TGF version. It was released in November 2000 at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo. It only contained 1 level; a very incomplete version of Green Flower Act 1. Tails was removed from the previous SRB2 Christmas demo.

DEMO 2[edit | edit source]

Demo 2 is the second demo of SRB2, which was released in March 5, 2001. It contained 4 levels (Complete Green Flower Zone and the first act of Techno Hill, albeit unfinished). It also contained the first ever map of MATCH MODE (meadow match) thus being the first version with this game mode working properly, Tails was re-added here with almost finished sprites, Knuckles was added too, but he was very incomplete and didn't have his own sprites. Knuckles is able to glide, but wasn't able to climb. This version added the title screen that was used until the release of version 2.2, Where it was redesigned to the current iteration.

DEMO 3[edit | edit source]

This is the third demo of srb2,it was released in 23 June, 2001. The biggest additions are the Tag and Race game modes, with the first appearance of Zero Ring zone, as well with Tag Valley zone, Techno Isle, and an unnamed map (those three were removed in 1.09.4). Oddly enough, in this version only, there were three new characters that never appeared again; Chao - a character made by the creator of Sonic Fangames HQ, Cinossu - a sonic recolor, and Mega Man.

DEMO 4[edit | edit source]

This update was notable for SRB2, as it included For the first time the special stages, Castle Eggman and the date activated secrets (that were going to be deleted later in 2.0). It also included several other secrets like Mario Goomba Blast zone (That was later going to be replaced with Mario Koopa Blast zone)a hidden version of an unfinished proto of Techno hill zone 2 with an additional master emerald finding, several Match, Race and Tag, and brand new Capture the Flag stages were added.[3] Knuckles had received his climbing ability, Sonic and Tails have already finished the last animations that was left.

SRB2 TOURNAMENT 2003[edit | edit source]

This version is a multiplayer-only version of srb2 to test out the master server. It was exclusively built for SAGE 2003. It was the first version to include multiple weapons to the match mode, as well as being the first version in adding digital music. It also added the CHAOS game mode that was later removed in version 1.09.4.

The name is a parody of Unreal Tournament.

FINAL DEMO ERA[edit | edit source]

First released in June 2003, the final demo was intended to be the last demo before the final game.later there was so many patches for final demo that in 2.0 the idea of "demos" would be scrapped. This demo included the only three finished zones they had at that point - Green Flower, Techno Hill, and Castle Eggman.

Castle eggman
Castleeggman srb2 1094.png

this demo added a intro based upon the SRB2 TGF intro, the special stages were made easier, and added the emblems in consequence it added the unlockable secrets that in this demo were: Mario Koopa Blast (replacing Mario Goomba Blast), Spring Hill zone (the first nights stage). and Super Sonic got added back.

Tails now had the ability to carry others around.

This version also added a experimental mode "Adventure Mode" this would give sonic the lightspeed dash and the homing attack, and Tails would fly like in Sonic Adventure. This mode was later deleted in version 1.08.1.

SA Example zone
the only level that you could use that gamemode, based off metal harbor from Sonic Adventure 2

Zim from the TV series Invader Zim was added as a character with a multiplayer match zone (both were removed in 1.09.4) Several multiplayer stages were also added.

Zim Base zone

FINAL DEMO 1.08[edit | edit source]

This version was notable for Adding SOC support in the game, that would be used in the code to this day, and would make the mods way more complex.

Sonic's "THOK" ability was restricted to once per jump, and progress on proper knuckles sprites began. Also two experimental game modes were added "sonic golf" and "hockey" both were removed in 1.09.

FINAL DEMO 1.09[edit | edit source]

This version added various things like the completion of super sonic sprites, and an Easter egg were you could play a unfinished version of Red Volcano act 1.

this also added several multiplayer maps that originated from a contest that Sonic team junior held.

FINAL DEMO 1.09.4[edit | edit source]

This update was huge for SRB2. It removed everything that would make the game look unprofessional (such as Zim, chaos gamemode and Zero Ring), but added a lots of things too, things such as map editing were made more extensive. now you were able to save screenshots of the game at any time, circuit stages were finished, and Mario Koopa Blast got finished too, and a added a Hyper Sonic Easter egg(that was deleted in the next version) map making was made more complex too, allowing people to make even better mods, this verion also added time attack and circuit game modes.

SRB2 2.0[edit | edit source]

This version of srb2 was released in July of 2009. It was the first release after the "Final Demo" line, and therefore ended the situation where each new release was supposed to be the last one before the final version of the game this version was huge for single player as it added nine new stages to the campaign. This removed things like difficulty (Easy,Medium,Hard) and such, but also made all the mods for previous versions incompatible.

The first act of Arid Canyon and Red Volcano were there, but the second acts of those zones weren't finished yet. Deep Sea Zone and Egg Rock were added too. Castle eggman got a remake here, this time it takes place on a forest.

Castle eggman
the first act of this version of castle eggman got reworked into forest fortress zone in 2.2

Special stages were reordered, and the weapon system for match mode was reworked, and everyone had a super form.

It was added the hide and seek mode with respective stages.

This version changed the SRB2 palette completely for a more colorful one, and also finished Knuckles's sprites.

SRB2 2.1[edit | edit source]

It was initially released on March 15th, 2014 and frequently patched over the following years; the final patch, v2.1.25, was released on August 17th, 2019. One of the largest updates in the history of SRB2, v2.1 brought significant changes to the game in many areas.

This version added a Record attack mode (previously time attack),all of the special stages were replaced with NIGHTS stages, and the old special stages were moved for multiplayer. To expand modding further than SOC,srb2 was given Lua compatibility, making mods have endless possibilities!.

Zones were redesigned and reskined to be more distinct to each other, like Techno Hill. red volcano received a lot of tweaks in the level design, and Egg Rock receives a new boss battle against metal sonic. The unlockables this time were: Pipe Towers(replacing Mario Koopa Blast), Azure Temple, Aerial Garden and Black Hole. Techno Hill 2 got completely redesigned.

Addons menu got reworked.

SRB2 2.2[edit | edit source]

Being the biggest update yet, and originally launching in December 7th 2019,this version revamps every graphic in the game and every level up to Red volcano act 1

Most notably, this update added slopes making the game much for akin to sonic games and less like DOOM. This update also added the majority of the game gimmicks and enemies. atop of all of that we got a completely new soundtrack much more professional than it's predecessor.

the Visual appearance of every level got overhauled and now feels more professional and less empty like prior versions. Most notably, Castle Eggman was remade from scratch (again) just like red volcano and deep sea, arid canyon got finished.

  • as of update 2.2.7, 3D Models are included with the game.
  • Now every object casts shadows.

Splitscreen got severely overhauled, with a brand new splitscreen options menu. This update reworked the camera system from scratch which was the main problem of srb2 in the past, not only that but there's three camera modes; Standard, Simple and Strafe (the old camera system).

From the multiplayer part, no maps were added, but three were removed.

Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Metal Sonic got new sprites in the new style of the game, this time looking more professional.
