Sonic: Before the Sequel is a fan game created by LakeFeperd in 2011 and serves as a prequel to Sonic 2, detailing the events on how Sonic and Tails met. It was updated during SAGE2012 to include a (mostly) custom soundtrack and new sprites for Sonic, and is often the version most people think of.

Unused Sprites[edit | edit source]
Start Up[edit | edit source]
"Hacker" Text[edit | edit source]
This unused object can be found on the first frame of the game, rewarding the player for supposedly hacking the game and obtaining the source. it cant normally be seen in game as its hidden under an all black sprite that covers the screen.
Title Screen[edit | edit source]
Sonic and Tails in the Tornado[edit | edit source]
On the title screen, there is an unused object of Sonic and Tails flying the Tornado. This object can be seen used on the title screen in one of the first Before the Sequel preview trailers, where it sits on the far right of the screen.
Sonic 3 Sky Sanctuary (Partial) Background[edit | edit source]
Part of Sonic 3's Sky Sanctuary background sprite can be found on the title screen. Similar to the Tornado sprite, this can be seen in action in the first preview trailer. Interestingly, this is one of the last leftover pieces from that background used. The full BG used in the preview trailers, but the rest of the sprite doesn't exist anywhere on the title screen.
Tails's Antagonist (Egg Mobile)[edit | edit source]
Normally, this can actually be seen in game, but its been resized to look like its flying in the background using a line of code and not the sprite itself (unlike the Tornado sprite).
Full Death Egg Being Launched[edit | edit source]
Also normally can be seen, but the full sprite can never be fully shown before the title screen fades out.
Full Error Screen[edit | edit source]
While this is used in game during the pre-Sunset Star cutscene, the top is never seen in-game. Presumably another joke from Feperd for people who managed to decompile the game (or in this case, the cutscenes).
Unused Cutscenes[edit | edit source]
2011 Version Leftovers[edit | edit source]
For some reason, the 2012 version still has the 2011 intro, ending and Horizon Heights post-boss cutscene. Of these, the 2011 intro can be seen in the 2012 version by pressing U on the stage select.
Alternate Bad Ending[edit | edit source]
An alternate version of the bad ending exists under "Sbtsess.swf".
2012 Version Differences[edit | edit source]
During Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2012 on August 5th, the game received an update that contained various changes and improvements:
- A lot of the game's soundtrack was completely redone from scratch by composers Falk Au Yeong, Funk Fiction, Andy Tunstall, and James Landino (KgZ); this includes most stage themes and the title screen, although cutscenes, Special Stages, Lost Levels' boss, Cloudy Crowd Act 3, Cloudy Crowd's boss, and Arcane Altitude's boss still use the 2011 soundtrack due to time constaints.
- Sonic was given a new sprite that looks more unique, while the 2011 version has a sprite more akin to Sonic 2. The 2011 version is still used in some cutscenes, Hill Top, and Starlight Carnival, though.
- The 2011 version lacked any special boss upon getting the good ending, while the 2012 version has a Super Sonic fight. Due to this, the cutscene before it had to be redone.
- The 2011 version included a special effect when hitting maximum speed as Sonic, after images appear. This was likely removed since the sprites are the same when super.
- Pressing the U key during gameplay in the 2012 version causes the game to skip the current "frame", which was implemented since Mac users had trouble saving. Should be noted that touching a star post causes Sonic's position to default to (0,0) due to the position not being properly reset.
- The intro was completely redone in the 2012 version, using a "cold opening" technique and doesn't show the seventh Emerald behind Sonic. Additionally, the 2011 version plays upon starting a new save file, while the 2012 version plays before the title screen.
- HillTop Heights Act 1 has a small gap added in the 2012 version.
- The audio effects for touching fuzzies in Star Shores were changed:
- In the 2011 version, all three Acts simply had the pitch shifted.
- In the 2012 version, Act 1 has the music pitch shifted in various spots, Act 2 has it sound like it's being played outside, and Act 3 changes it into a dubstep remix.
