RemorseView

From Misc Data Digs

RemorseView is an MS-DOS application created by Remorse ASCII, the official ASCII art sub-label of artscene group ACiD Productions, to facilitate viewing their artwork, and included in their art packs beginning with pack #11.

Hidden Game (Pac-Man)[edit | edit source]

A text-mode implementation of Pac-Man is hidden inside of the RemorseView application itself. To play it, the user must create a directory named RMRS1981, then run RemorseView and attempt to view the contents of that directory. The game will start immediately.

While the game does not include such features as bonus fruit, differing behavior for the ghosts, or any animation apart from Pac-Man's idle animation, the basic functionality of Pac-Man is present. Pac-Man is controlled with the arrow keys, must eat all of the dots on the board to complete a level, and will lose a life if he lets any of the ghosts touch him. However, he can eat one of four Power Pellets to turn the ghosts blue, causing them to flee and enabling him to eat them for extra points. Unlike in the arcade game, Pac-Man may also invade the ghosts' house in the center and eat them while the Power Pellet is active. The user may quit the game and return to RemorseView by pressing Escape at any time, showing the contents of the RMRS1981 directory.

This Easter egg does not appear in the beta version of RemorseView included with Remorse ASCII's pack #10, as it will simply open the chosen sub-directory as usual.
